Review – HIDDEN BODIES by Caroline Kepnes

The sequel to my favourite book of 2014 is now available in the UK, and releasing on February 23rd (next Tuesday!) in the US! Check out my review to Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes and get one-clicking/pre-ordering!

In the compulsively readable follow-up to her widely acclaimed debut novel, You, Caroline Kepnes weaves a tale that Booklist calls “the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman.”

Hidden Bodies marks the return of a voice that Stephen King described as original and hypnotic, and through the divisive and charmingly sociopathic character of Joe Goldberg, Kepnes satirizes and dissects our culture, blending suspense with scathing wit.

Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.

In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: truelove. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice…

Oh. My. Joe.

I am not an eloquent reviewer. Half the time, fancy words go right over my head (don’t tell Joe I had to look up what “solipsistic” meant!). But what I am, is a reader who is extremely passionate about this series…about this character. This murderous but loveable man who just wants to find true and honest love.

It was such a long wait between the release of You, and then Hidden Bodies, and I relished being back in Joe’s world. Seeing how his mind works is always such a thrill and my own mind was going crazy keeping up with him and the things he does.

Will he kill them? Will he let them go? Will he get caught? Will he get away with it? What is he going to do next??? Gah! It’s such a rollercoaster of a book. I was constantly on edge because it’s so unpredictable and absolutely anything can happen when it comes to Joe.

I never thought I’d love someone who goes around killing people (even in fiction!!) but there’s just something about this character the author created that has me a little twisted up, seeing things from his perspective, and just loving him!

Do I agree with his choices? No. Are they fun to read about? Absolutely! And even though this technically isn’t a romance, this all ultimately comes down to love. And everyone deserves love, don’t they?

So do I honestly root for this serial killer to be able to have his very own HEA, even with all the bodies piling up? Hell. Yes.
