Clementine by R. Jean Wilson – Donna’s 3 Star Review

Addison Caldwell has her future laid out before her. She has good friends, applications in the mail for PA school, and sweaty yoga to take the edge off of her lack of love life. Just when she finds herself right where she wants to be, Addison stumbles on a familiar stranger standing before her at a coffee shop. He’s beautiful and brilliant. She’s immediately drawn to him and can’t put her finger on how she could possibly have met him before. She finds herself tumbling head first toward a man that she knows is in a league composed solely of him and a bevy of Victoria Secret Supermodels.

“Wait,” he said, reaching out to touch her hand.
The second his hand reached hers, Addison felt a warmth spread through her body. The innocent contact stopped her mid-stand and she whipped her head down. His sturdy hand was barely resting on hers, and yet it was as if he had clenched it directly onto her heart. Holy. She pulled her hand back instinctively, confused by her body’s reaction to such an innocent touch.
What the hell am I getting myself into?

Donna’s 3 Star Review

I enjoyed the premise of the book that fate will intervene to reunite to souls regardless of the paths their lives take. It was a story of new love with an underlying sense of familiarity. The chemistry between Holden and Addison was there but the story didn’t really ring true for me.

Holden and Addison see each other in a coffee shop and she can’t stop thinking about him. Something is familiar. Addison is in her senior year of college studying to get her PA and is working at a doctor’s office for some hands on experience. When the office is invited to a party a local hospital, Addison and Holden run into each other again. Dr. Holden Taylor is the new, hot, young doctor who is interning at the hospital. He has the ladies swooning at his feet wherever he goes.

Addison and Holden start “dating” but since no one actually calls it a date, she deems it as just hanging out. So when Addison gets accepted to a PA school in North Carolina she holds off telling him until the night before she leaves. They share a moment and then she is gone. She leaves with unanswered questions and a longing for Holden.

Fast-forward 11 months, she has completed her PA training in North Carolina and is now returning home to complete her internship. Accepted to two hospitals she chooses the one that Holden is at.
After some avoiding of one another, they reconnect and pick up where they left off. Hiding their relationship from the hospital until they have received approval that they are not violating hospital policy.

After celebrating at a hospital fundraiser they return to Holden’s apartment for a night of passion and discover that their paths have previously crossed.

Like I mentioned, I liked the idea of fate, but the story just didn’t support the characters. I would have enjoyed the story more from a first person point of view. Since the story was told in 3rd person I don’t feel that I was able to really connect to the characters. I didn’t feel engaged in their interactions, just an outsider listening in.

The conflicts that the couple faced were not really conflicts. Stacy the super jealous, clingy blonde from the hospital was more of an annoyance than anything. I am not sure why Addison allowed her to get under her skin and in the beginning of the story it appeared that they were friends. The mis-understanding that she cuts off contact over is just that a mis-understanding.

While this may not have been an amazing read for me, I have seen reviews by others that really enjoyed it. So, I will leave it for you to decide for yourself if Clementine is for you.
